Impact of Hurricane Ike on Beacon Place in Galveston

On September 11, 2008, in preparation for arrival of Hurricane Ike on Galveston Island, all residents of Beacon Place were evacuated from the property by noon. The property consists of a community center and ten town homes. The majority of the residents stayed with friends and the remaining families were transported to Austin, Texas to a shelter. The property sustained mostly exterior damages to the roof, soffits and gutters, broken windows and a demolished shed. There was minor damage to the interior of the units consisting mostly of appliance replacement due to the electrical surges in the aftermath of the storm and flooring replacement.

WOMAN, Inc. reached out to the many philanthropic agencies and was rewarded with grants to provide relief to victims and sustain ongoing programmatic and operating support due to the financial burdens incurred after Hurricane Ike. The funds also assisted in the renovation of Beacon Place. On November 4, 2008, the Gulf Coast Ike Relief Fund Advisory Board awarded $31,000 to WOMAN, Inc. In January of 2009, we received a $10,000 grant from the Local Initiatives Support Corporation as well as a grant from the Wachovia Foundation in February in the amount of $10,000. We thank them for caring and sharing in our mission to provide safe, affordable housing to women and children who are survivors of domestic violence and reside at Beacon Place.

Note: WOMAN, Inc. received funding from the Wachovia Foundation previously, $5,000 in 2007 and $10,000 in 2008.
